Sudbury Valley New Horizons GroupsWhat groups do we have? Our primary function is to offer a concert band and a string ensemble. The bands are directed by Diane Muffitt, John McLellan and Linda Murdock, with Dan Foote as percussion coordinator. The string orchestra groups are directed by Oliver Chang and Kett Lee, with string assistant, Louie Steptoe. We also have After-rehearsal Rehearsals that meet for a half hour every other week after our regular string and band rehearsal (from 8:20-8:50). These groups are optional and include varying opportunities for some more advanced playing and exploration. In the past we have had offerings such as: Swing Band, Woodwind Choir, Brass Ensemble, Strings & Winds Ensemble, small ensembles, Klezmer Exploration, Celtic Exploration, Movie and Broadway Song Sight-reading and other possible combinations (offerings vary session to session). No auditions necessary, but these groups are for our band and string ensemble members only. There is no extra charge for after-rehearsal rehearsal groups. Sometime in the spring we have a concert for groups to perform should they wish (often the "exploratories" don't wish to perform). Many of our members get together and play ensembles on their own at members homes. We sponsor "Soirée Musicales" which are relaxed, no stress performance opportunities (solo or ensemble) for our members and their friends/family. Want to sing? Check out our sister group, The Golden Tones, an elder choir which is also part of the New Horizons family. Our programs do not include any instruments except concert band instruments or string orchestra instruments. Piano, guitar and bass are used in the Swing Band, but are played by members of the String Orchestra or Band. Sorry!
